The upgraded prototype KE60 with 60 kW nominal power was built in 2012 and is now being tested at different sites in order to assess industrial viability. The prototype is equipped with two Siemens brushless with direct drive permanent-magnet motors/generators with 60–kW peak power. The KE60 is able to perform autonomous flight operations and to generate energy with wind speed above 3 m/s. The energy produced is accumulated in a series of batteries that have a total voltage of about 340 V. The batteries also supply the energy to roll back the lines when needed. The prototype is capable of driving the flight of 10–50–m2 kites with cables up to 1200 m long.
